Children under the age of five are at the highest risk of being the subject of a child protection plan (Children in Need in England, DfE, 2011). So, if you work in early years settings, you must have robust policies and procedures in place to ensure you can identify the signs of abuse and make appropriate referrals in order to effectively safeguard the children in your care.


Further to the recommendations laid out in the Tickell review, and the upcoming revisions to the Early Years Foundation Stage, your safeguarding obligations and duties are changing.
