This unit aims to be a catalyst for the development of a whole-school framework to safeguard pupils from sexual exploitation and grooming, so the commitment of a range of decision-makers is essential. These can be senior leaders, nominated safeguarding governors, staff with pastoral responsibilities and staff with responsibility for policy development.
Raising awareness of sexual exploitation with pupils is an important focus of this session, so it will be beneficial for staff with responsibility for PSHE education to complete this unit.
Important note
Hearing about child sexual abuse and exploitation can be distressing and having professional qualifications or years of experience working with children doesn’t always make it easier and can produce a range of emotions. Any training course about the sexual abuse of children and young people is necessarily descriptive and inevitably disturbing.
You may experience a range of emotions, from embarrassment or disbelief to anger and revulsion. You yourself may have had a difficult or abusive childhood. If you feel in need of support, please take some time out and seek support from your known networks and employer.
Aims and outcomes
The aim of this unit is to enable managers to raise awareness of the issue across the school and provide effective support and leadership to pupils, parents and staff. Participants will be able to:
- assist in strategies to raise awareness of sexual exploitation amongst pupils, parents and staff
- use the information gathering tool to inform an appropriate response to concerns
- explain the roles of multi-agency safeguarding partners
- make a detailed and well-informed referral about sexual exploitation to children’s social care
- contribute to the school’s policy on sexual exploitation.
