Being able to use spoken and written language effectively is a vital part of learning.

For children with dyslexia, dyscalculia and other language issues, accessing the curriculum is a real challenge and can have a huge impact on learning. All teachers need to be able to remove barriers to learning and provide support for these pupils in the classroom.

This unit aims to provide teachers with practical advice to help them support pupils and ensure that all pupils have access to quality learning opportunities.

Aims and outcomes

  • Describe dyslexia and dyscalculia and explain why they are called specific learning difficulties.
  • Recognise ways in which dyslexia and dyscalculia can affect pupils’ achievement.
  • Identify strategies for supporting pupils with dyslexia or dyscalculia.
