Whilst there are many benefits to promoting strong parental engagement in schools, there are barrier factors to consider too.

In this unit, we will look at several factors that have been historically considered barriers to parental engagement.

We’ll also explore actions that can be taken to overcome barriers, including real-life examples from schools. Recent years have seen a reduction in child and family services and an increase in home education. These factors have had a significant impact on common practices in education, including an increased demand for mental health support in schools and the use of technology when communicating with parents.

Aims and outcomes

In this unit you will:

  • review factors that can create barriers to parental engagement
  • consider recent improvements that are helping schools to strengthen parental engagement
  • learn from real-life examples where schools have successfully overcome barriers and strengthened parental engagement.
