In this unit, we introduce some of the terms used in the course and when talking about peer-on-peer abuse, the differences in legislation and guidance in the various parts of the UK and your role in what is an aspect of safeguarding children and young people. We look at one person’s experience of being bullied by other children and how it affected him at the time and into his adult life. We also look at the impact of peer sexual abuse as reported by young people contacting a national helpline. We will begin to identify the kinds of behaviour involved in peer-on-peer abuse.

In the units that follow, we will look in more detail at these topics; in this unit the emphasis is on understanding that the effects of peer-on-peer abuse on the individual experiencing it can be very serious, both at the time it occurs and later on, and that you – whatever your role – can play an important part in safeguarding young people in relation to peer-on-peer abuse.

Remember to record any questions or ideas you might want to refer back to. This will help you to apply the learning in your work.

Finally, you should also be aware of the importance of looking after yourself and what to do if you are affected by the topics covered here.
