This unit is about taking stock and reflecting on what you now understand about pupil wellbeing.

The most important thing to consider is whether this will make a fundamentally positive difference to the children/young people in the school without causing extra work for staff. If not, you are strongly encouraged to scrap it.

In many schools, staff push for all kinds of wellbeing ideas, but most have limited positive effects (and a whole heap of extra effort). It is pointless to introduce random ideas before the underlying reason for poor pupil wellbeing is examined and resolved.

Some difficult choices need to be made when treating the top layer of symptoms does not work long-term. You need to delve deeper and tackle the root causes. And that takes time, effort and careful planning – as well as good communication and comprehension.

This unit provides action planning opportunities and an evaluation toolkit to help you gauge what works well, what does not work and what could be even better.

Stick to the plan and give it time to work by being clear and consistent.

Aims and outcomes

  • Consider what you now understand about pupil wellbeing – in theory and in practice – and know how to apply it.
  • Create a plan of action based on SMART goals.
  • Decide on what and how you will evaluate effectiveness and demonstrate impact.
