Securing pupil progress, and helping each child to achieve their full potential, is a key mandate for every teacher: it is our ‘moral imperative’. Whilst there is currently a significant emphasis on catch-up programmes and remedial interventions, these can often be ‘too little, too late’ for vulnerable pupils.
On a practical level, it can be hard to close learning gaps once they develop. Instead, the ideal is to provide Quality First Teaching (QFT) to the whole class in the first instance. This firm foundation, also known as wave 1 teaching, is a fundamental entitlement for all pupils and is vital in underpinning all aspects of subsequent progress.
This course will provide busy teachers at all stages with a range of practical, pedagogical tools for use in Quality First Teaching.
Aims and outcomes
- Understand what is meant by Quality First Teaching (QFT) and why an inclusive classroom is important.
- Explore the proven pedagogies that lie at the heart of QFT.
- Consider the central role of formative assessment, also known as assessment for Learning or AfL, in QFT.
- Understand the importance of personalisation and interventions in relation to QFT.
- Be able to apply the principles and strategies for QFT in one’s own practice.
