This unit is designed to raise staff awareness and develop a whole-school approach to tackling exploitation and grooming.

It will help you to recognise the warning signs of grooming and sexual exploitation and know what action to take.

Important note 1

The focus of this unit is all children and young people up to the age of 18. For brevity, the words ‘children’ or ‘pupils’ are used throughout the unit, however, whilst the age of sexual consent is 16, young people aged 16 and 17 can also be victims of sexual exploitation.

A child is anyone under the age of 18, even if they are living independently or married.

Adults over the age of 18 who need protection are described as ‘adults at risk’ according to the Children Act 1989 & Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006.

Important note 2

Any training course about sexual activity involving children and young people is necessarily descriptive and inevitably disturbing.

Participants may experience a range of emotions, from embarrassment to disbelief, anger and revulsion.

You yourself may have had a difficult or abusive childhood. If you feel in need of support, please take some time out and seek support from your known networks.

Nevertheless, it is important for all staff to take this unit, as any one of them could notice warning signs, or receive a disclosure from a pupil.
