Introduction

A serious case review (SCR) is commissioned for every case where abuse or neglect is suspected and either a child dies or is seriously harmed, specifically when there are concerns about how organisations or professionals worked together to safeguard the child.

These cases are often harrowing, but much can be learned from them to prevent future incidents.

Aims and outcomes

So far this course has covered the meaning of safeguarding and child protection, what abuse and neglect are and how you might recognise them, where to get information and support, and what to do if you have a concern about a child.

This unit will help enable you to:

  • Describe a range of possible responses following report of a concern or a referral to children’s social care.
  • Outline ways in which you might continue to be involved following a referral.
  • Understand what a serious case review (SCR) is, why it happens and when.

This unit will cover what happens after a referral has been made and what lessons can be learnt from SCRs.
