Introduction

Supporting vulnerable pupils through transition and beyond

For many pupils the move into secondary school is a smooth and effortless process. But for some the transition from primary school into secondary school can be a stressful and isolating experience. Even when supportive transition interventions are put into place, many sensitive, vulnerable pupils find secondary school difficult or scary and are at risk of failing; they find the size, structure, procedures and work overwhelming and threatening. Without support and guidance these vulnerable groups can quickly become demotivated and disaffected.

If appropriate provision can be put into place to support these pupils as soon as their difficulties are identified, it is possible to encourage them to build up emotional resilience, develop their sense of self-worth and belief in themselves, reduce the difficulties they may experience, prepare them for adult life and make their time at secondary school an enjoyable, worthwhile experience.

Beyond Transition aims to support vulnerable pupils through transition and beyond. This practical resource includes strategies for encouraging teamwork, participation, raising self-esteem within the classroom and, for the most vulnerable, a programme to support pupils at an individual or group level. The Survival Skills Programme will enable your pupils to develop skills that will help them both in school and when they move to the workplace or further education.

Summary of contents

Beyond Transition will help you to:

  • Develop effective school policies and practices to identify and support vulnerable pupils
  • Develop the self-esteem and confidence of your more vulnerable pupils
  • Provide professional development for all staff involved in pupil transition
  • Equip susceptible young people with the skills needed to succeed in secondary school and beyond.

Part One offers staff suggestions for whole-school and classroom-based advice and strategies for supporting all Year 7 pupils pre and post transition as well as a structure in which to raise awareness to the intervention, offer them suggestions on identification, guidance on base-lining, implementation, monitoring and evaluating the provision.

Included in Part One is a staff development PowerPoint presentation that outlines the programme and offers strategies to support the transition process.

Part Two: The Survival Skills Programme can be delivered through a series of lessons or workshops on an individual or small-group basis depending on the needs of the targeted young people and the time available. The programme includes an introductory session, five modules and a concluding session. Each of the modules contains suggestions for lessons or workshops involving a collection of discussions, tasks, role-play and games that will build on organisational and social skills, raise confidence and self-esteem and ultimately better equip the pupils with the skills to be successful both in and out of school. There are also extension activities within each module for staff to use for reinforcement or to enable them to meet the needs of the individual. The materials have been designed to be fully inclusive to ensure that they are accessible or easily adaptable for all pupils.

Part Two: The Survival Skills Programme

Introductory Session
This session looks at introducing the programme to the individual pupil or group; outlining what they will be working on and how it is aimed to help them. It offers an opportunity to look at setting group rules around confidentiality, building trust and valuing each other as well as offering them a chance to discuss how they feel about their new school and to set themselves targets that they would like to achieve by the end of the programme.

Module 1 – Friendship
Module 1 looks at what friendship means to your pupils, making new friends, maintaining friendships and what to do when things go wrong. It also explores differing relationships with both peers and adults in the school.

Module 2 – Organisational Skills
This module touches upon the skills needed to get to and from school. This includes ensuring that the right equipment is brought into school at the right time and managing and coordinating the paperwork and resources for each subject. It covers the skills needed to ensure that homework is understood, completed and handed in successfully. In this module there is the option to work on memory and study skills, dealing with tests and exams, moving around the school and understanding who each staff member is.

Module 3 – Dealing with Feelings
The focus of Module 3 is identifying and understanding emotions. The sessions look at helping pupils to talk about their own emotions as well as developing a sense of empathy for others. It offers suggestions for repairing and rebuilding relationships by helping them to understand and practise social skills.

Module 4 – Problem Solving
Module 4 looks at problem solving, focusing on conflict with teachers and conflict with other pupils. The lessons focus on practical ways to encourage pupils to become assertive in their relationships, to give them the courage to learn how to say ‘no’ when they are uncomfortable about a situation and to offer strategies for developing an ‘I can do’ attitude for problem solving which can be transferred to their lives outside of school.

Module 5 – Moving Forward
The final module looks at encouraging the pupil to reflect on the progress they have made and how they can continue to move forward. It also offers suggestions and strategies to ask for help when they need it.

Conclusion
The concluding session helps the pupils to reflect upon the skills they have learned, identify plans for the future and celebrate their achievements.
