This unit is about clear target setting.

It is about conducting those productive conversations with line managers that many staff rarely find time for in the hurly burly of term time to discuss personal practice, career ambitions, particular educational interests and anticipated success of those pupils in a teacher’s charge. This practice is valuable for pupils and the two members of staff alike.

Effective appraisal targets are relatively straightforward to set. Research and a little careful preparation (on the part of the reviewer and reviewee) make the process of target setting relevant and productive.

Aims and outcomes

All appraisers will:

  • understand the role they play in the appraisal process
  • feel confident about helping the member(s) of staff they appraise to set targets that will have a positive impact on classroom performance and in turn the effective learning of pupils
  • understand how to formulate targets that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-related (SMART)
  • be able to complete the relevant school specific paperwork that helps ensure consistency of target setting across the school.
