Author details

Jack Procter-Blain is a content assistant for Optimus Education. He's particularly interested in all things SEND, safeguarding and pastoral care.

This audit will help you determine the skills and responsibilities required of teaching assistants in order to support high quality teaching, meet additional needs and improve outcomes for all pupils.

The four broad areas of effective practice have been adapted from the recent guidance, 'Professional Standards for Teaching Assistants' (2016)This document should be read alongside the skills audit for further clarity.

By completing the audit, you will be able to determine your confidence in:

  1. upholding professional values and conduct
  2. developing core and specialist knowledge
  3. working with the teacher to support learning
  4. communicating with key stakeholders.

There is also space to provide an example of when you have demonstrated each skill as part of your role.
