Schools face increased accountability for pupil premium spending

Schools are to be set targets for narrowing the performance gap between disadvantaged and other pupils.

The initiative is expected to be announced next month as part of Nick Clegg's social mobility strategy. It will tighten up accountability with regard to the pupil premium, which schools can currently spend as they wish.

Ofsted will also be required to report on how schools are spending the pupil premium money and will take into account a school's performance in this area during inspection. From September all schools will be expected to explain how they are spending the money in their online reports.
