Module 1: Making the transition to MAT leader

Date: Tuesday 11 September 2018
Time: 9am - 4.30pm

As MATs grow the challenges faced by their leaders change.  Increasingly MAT Leaders need to become strategic managers and to see resources, priorities and performance in a diversified corporate and strategic context.  This module helps those in senior positions to make the transition to becoming a MAT Leader. The module will focus on:
 
  • Developing yourself and others as strategic managers.
  • Values and vision: slogans or driving forces?
  • How to develop an effective strategy.
  • Priorities and decision-making.
  • Making strategic choices and implementing them.

MATs Summit 2018

Date: Thursday 11 - Friday 12 October 2018
Day 1: 9am - 5pm followed by drinks and evening gala from 7pm
Day 2: 9.30am - 1.30pm 
Venue: Hilton Metropole, Kings Road, Brighton BN1 2FU

Included in the MAT Leadership Programme is (non-compulsory) attendance at the Optimus Education MATs Summit. This two-day residential with an overnight stay will give delegates access to high-quality CPD on issues relevant to MAT leaders, whilst also providing opportnities to get to know and build relationships with other leaders within the cohort. Module 2: Strategies for school improvement

Date: Thursday 22 November 2018
Time: 9am - 4.30pm
Location: Mercure Manchester Picadilly Hotel, Portland Street, Manchester M1 4PH 
 
 
The rationale for the creation and growth of MATs is to deliver better outcomes for students whilst improving economy and efficiency.  This module looks at how this can be achieved, recognising that different schools have different starting points and that governance and structures need to evolve to be effective in a changing strategic context. The module will focus on:
 
  • Structure and objectives for MATs.
  • Improvement journeys.
  • Authority and responsibility.
  • Accountability.
  • Focus, investment and performance management.

Module 3: Leadership and organisational cultural change

Date: Monday 14 January 2019
Time: 9am - 4.30pm
Venue: TBC (MAT visit)
 
Transformational change in organisational culture and performance is inextricably linked to organisational leadership.  This module explores leadership in the strategic context of MATs and how organisational culture can be changed. The module will focus on:
 
  • Understanding leadership.
  • Leadership styles.
  • Understanding you as a leader.
  • Leadership and organisational cultural change.
  • Managing organisational cultural change.

Module 4: Improving Governance

Date: Thursday 7 February 2019
Time: 9am - 4.30pm
Location: Manchester (TBC)
 
As MATs grow so too does the governance challenge and the need for different forms of governance.  Similarly, the demands on governing bodies change requiring MAT Leaders to have a different relationship with, and focus for, the governing body.  This module seeks to explore the different forms of governance and the relationship between governance, accountability and relationships between the governing body and the MAT Leaders. The module will focus on:
 
  • What is governance and what is its relationship with performance?
  • Different forms of governance.
  • Governance, performance and regulation.
  • The role of the Chair of the Board.
  • The relationship between the CEO, the Chair of the Board, the Board and the MAT Leadership Team.

Module 5: Finance and the 3 E's (Economy, Effiency, Effectivenes)

Date: Thursday 14 March 2019
Time: 9am - 4.30pm
Location: London

As finances become more constrained, a major challenge for MAT Leaders is to ensure they manage budgets in the strategic context of balancing economy, efficiency and effectiveness.  This module explores this strategic balancing challenge and identifies how the challenge can be addressed. The module will focus on:

  • Financial management and the 3E’s.
  • Balancing the 3E’s.
  • Measuring the 3E’s.
  • Moving up the hierarchy of efficiency gains.
  • Delivering the benefits of being a MAT.

Module 6: Strategies for sustainable growth

Date: Tuesday 30 April 2019
Time: 9am-4.30pm
Location: London

Growth is not an end in itself but a means to an end.  If growth is to enable the MAT to achieve its objectives, it must be sustainable.  This module seeks to explore growth for MATs and what needs to be in place to ensure that it is sustainable. The module will focus on:

  • What business are MATs in?
  • The benefits and disadvantages of growth.
  • Managing growth and its leadership challenges.
  • An agenda for sustainable growth.
  • Growth options and choosing what’s best for your MAT.
